Peter Magyar will be the new PM of Hungary as the right-wing party of his, Tisza, prevailed over the Fidesz of the far-right Viktor Orban putting an end to his dominance after 16 years.
The new prime minister stated that his goal is the combating of corruption, the restoration of the independence of justice and of the freedom of the media, with the hope that Hungary will receive European funds that under Orban had been frozen.
He himself had been former loyalist of Orban and now, being opponent of him, secured one decisive majority of two thirds that allows to him to overturn laws which helped the outgoing nationalist prime minister to turn Hungary into one “illiberal democracy” during the 16 years that he was in the power.
The Parliament will have only right-wing or far-right parties, as from the 199 seats the 138 will be held by Tisza, the Fidesz 55 and the also far-right Mi Hazánk 6.
The four successive governments of Orban have eroded in depth the state of law in Hungary, placing in the courts judges loyal to him and turning the 80% of the media into mouthpieces of the government.
He clashed, also, repeatedly with the EU, which has blocked billions euros in funding, for one series of policies, including of justice, of migration and of Ukraine.
He had, also, the support of Donald Trump and of the Kremlin, as he was the most pro-Russian leader within the EU.
Now, the Parliament of Hungary will have only right-wing or far-right parties, as from the 199 seats the 138 will be held by Tisza, the Fidesz 55 and the also far-right Mi Hazánk 6.
