The Court of Appeal found Mariana M. and Dimitra Z. guilty in the Ambelokipi case, while it acquitted Nikos Romanos and the other two defendants, Dimitris P. and Argyris K., due to “very serious doubts,” after they had been in prison for more than 17 months.
Mariana M. and Dimitra Z. were convicted, depending on the act, of criminal organization, aggravated manufacture of explosive devices, possession of explosive materials, explosive mechanisms, pistols and ammunition, supply and possession of explosive materials, explosion through the use of explosive materials, and damage to another person’s property.
The prosecutor of the Three-Member Court of Appeal for Felonies, Alexandra Pischina, had also proposed the guilt of the two women. At the same time, she had requested the acquittal of Nikos Romanos and the other two defendants due to “very serious doubts.”
Nikos Romanos had been in prison for more than 17 months because his fingerprint was found in the apartment on a bag containing a wrapped gun.
The Ambelokipi case concerns the explosion in an apartment in the area, during which the anarchist K. Xymitiris lost his life.
Mariana M. had stated at a previous hearing, during her defense, that the existence of a terrorist organization presupposes a specific structure, roles, and specialized functions, stressing that no such characteristics arise.
Nikos Romanos, on the other hand, had said: “For things I have done, I have no problem taking responsibility. In this case, however, I made no choice. I have come to prove that I am not an elephant. (…) I cannot know when I came into contact with a bag. No matter how many questions are asked, I cannot know.”
