New Democracy will propose the formation of a Parliamentary Inquiry Committee to investigate the OPEKEPE scandal, focusing on the agency’s operations from 1998 to the present, according to Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Pavlos Marinakis.[1], [2]
He stated that “all dysfunctions of the agency” will be investigated and cited seven reasons why the government will propose the formation of the Inquiry Committee.
According to Marinakis, the Inquiry Committee will investigate the functioning of OPEKEPE, which managed annual subsidies amounting to €2.5 billion for 645,000 producers.
PASOK will request a preliminary investigation into L. Avgenakis and M. Voridis on Wednesday, according to “Ef.Syn.”, while SYRIZA commented that the government is bypassing the justice system.
Particular emphasis is placed on the more than €2.7 billion in fines imposed by the EU, with the committee aiming to identify their causes, gaps, and responsibilities. It will examine the actions of the agency’s administrations, their recommendations to political leaderships, the handling of fraud cases, and the issue of flagged tax IDs.
The role of the Technical Advisor will be scrutinized, as well as the effectiveness of internal audits and the “technical solution” for subsidies and grazing lands. The committee will also examine the failure to implement Grazing Management Plans and their connection to digital tools.
Regarding former ministers L. Avgenakis and M. Voridis, the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister emphasized that the conditions for forming a Preliminary Investigation Committee are not met.
