After intense discussion and disagreements over the procedures, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance president Stefanos Kasselakis’s surprise proposal [1], [2], [3] to replace Socrates Famellos with Nikos Pappas as the head of the party’s parliamentary group was approved yesterday. The proposal passed with 17 votes in favor, 12 against, 4 “present”.
Earlier, there was a disagreement about whether a motion of no confidence against Socrates Famellos should be proposed first (as the party’s statutes require) before voting on the new president.
Ultimately, Socrates Famellos, who had previously said he would not resign and did not accept his “removal,” changed his position and agreed to a single vote for Nikos Pappas. He also said the president’s proposal “leads us to even greater internal strife.”
Of the 35 party deputies, Kasselakis’s proposal received 17 votes in favor and 16 against, while 2 (Alexis Tsipras and P. Tsapanidou) did not participate.
From the 35 SYRIZA deputies, Kasselakis’s proposal passed with 17 votes in favor, 16 votes against, and two (Alexis Tsipras and Popi Tsapanidou, who replaced Othonas Iliopoulos) not participating.
Sources from the “87 group” (Tsipras’s faction), cited by Efsyn, said: “Kasselakis is a president without a majority in the parliamentary group, holding only 17 out of 35 votes.”
At the end of the meeting before the vote, Stefanos Kasselakis said: “We need to move forward with this reshuffle to work better together. We must be united against the Mitsotakis regime, and I ask you to vote in favor. We cannot postpone the vote, as it would lead to the destabilization of SYRIZA.”
