The new Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Makarios Lazaridis, is facing criticism from the opposition over his degree, on the basis of which he was hired in 2007 as a political appointee at the Ministry of Education.

It is about a title of 1992 from a private college (it is being checked as “fake” by the Authorities), with which he claims that then it was sufficient in order to be hired.

In his statements, in fact, Makarios Lazaridis had presented the “College of the Southeastern Europe” as a strict, top educational institution. “In these colleges they would not pass even the first semester those who criticize” he had said specifically.

The appointed associate is hired for the staffing of offices of government officials, without the typical procedure being followed (e.g. through ASEP).

In last year’s reports, however, it was revealed that the body, which is related to this specific college and in recent years operated under the name “American University of Athens”, did not have any license at all from the Ministry of Education for the awarding of academic degrees, while it was not entitled to give even simple certificates of attendance.

Thus, against the body and its legal representatives, a lawsuit is pending from eight students who denounce that they were misled, as, among other things, they paid a significant amount for tuition fees.

The opposition says that, based on a law of 1994, whoever is hired as scientific staff should have a degree from a Greek university or from a foreign institution, recognized in Greece.
