Iran and the United States say there has been progress in the peace talks, although both sides stress that a final agreement will not come soon.
Donald Trump said the two sides need to take their time “to get the deal done properly.” In recent weeks, he has also faced criticism from members of his own Republican Party, who argue that the agreement being negotiated is not a good one.
“No one has seen” the agreement, “or even knows exactly what it is,” the US president said, adding that negotiations have not even been completed yet. “So don’t listen to the losers who are criticizing something they know nothing about.”
While the talks are ongoing, Israel bombed southern and eastern Lebanon on Saturday, killing 11 people despite the ceasefire currently in place.
Marco Rubio struck a similar tone during a brief interview on Sunday while visiting New Delhi, saying that “you cannot solve a nuclear issue in 72 hours, scribbled carelessly on a napkin.”
Iran confirmed progress toward an agreement that would extend the ceasefire for 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, among other measures.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said during a press briefing on the key points of a possible agreement with the United States to end the war that “it is fair to say we have reached agreement on a large part of the issues under discussion.”
