The European Commission has announced the appointment of its Executive Vice-President, Raffaele Fitto, as Special Envoy for the Cyprus issue.
In his new role, Raffaele Fitto will contribute to the UN-led settlement process and will work closely with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar.
According to the European Commission’s announcement, he will engage with all stakeholders and interlocutors with the aim of preparing the ground for the resumption of negotiations and supporting a comprehensive, functional, and sustainable settlement of the Cyprus issue. His responsibilities will also include promoting confidence-building measures between the parties involved.
Raffaele Fitto said it is an honour for him to take on this new responsibility and expressed his commitment to supporting the UN-led process.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, welcomed the decision, noting that the appointment of an official at the highest level of the European Commission’s institutional hierarchy demonstrates the European Union’s increased interest and its readiness to play a more meaningful role in efforts to restart negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations.
For his part, Raffaele Fitto said it is an honour for him to take on this new responsibility and expressed his commitment to supporting the UN-led process. He also said he would work closely with María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar to help create the conditions necessary for the resumption of negotiations and the achievement of a comprehensive and lasting settlement.
