A Russian drone that was taking part in an attack against Ukraine struck an apartment building in Galați, Romania, a city located near the borders with Ukraine and Moldova, injuring two people.
Romania, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, described the incident as an “irresponsible escalation” by Moscow, stated that there would be consequences for diplomatic relations between the two countries, and said that sanctions would be pursued at the European level. It also asked NATO to accelerate the deployment of drone-defense systems to the country.
Specifically, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu wrote in a post on X: “We will formally communicate the consequences that this lack of responsibility on the part of the Russian Federation will have for the diplomatic relations between our countries, as well as the next steps at the European level regarding sanctions packages.”
Galați has become one of Romania’s main hubs for receiving and hosting Ukrainian refugees since Russia’s invasion in 2022.
The incident occurred as Russia is threatening to intensify its sustained strikes against Ukraine.
Romania’s Ministry of Defense said the drone was detected by radar inside Romanian airspace before crashing into the roof of an apartment building in the city of Galați on Friday. In addition to injuring two people, the impact led to the evacuation of several residents.
The Romanian military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter with authorization to engage targets, while emergency warning messages were issued to residents in the affected areas.
