A sailing ban is in effect until at least 13:00 from the ports of Rafina, Lavrio and Piraeus due to strong 9 Beaufort winds, and it appears likely to be extended following a new assessment [1], [2], [3].

From Piraeus, most routes are cancelled (see full list here); from Rafina, sailings to the Cyclades are suspended; and from Lavrio, services to Kythnos are halted along with the Agia Marina–Nea Styra route. However, routes to the Saronic Islands and the Rafina–Marmari service are operating normally.

The Coast Guard is urging citizens to contact ferry companies for updated departure times and to avoid approaching the ports.

The Coast Guard is urging citizens to contact ferry companies for updated departure times and to avoid approaching the ports, where there is already severe traffic congestion caused by hundreds of stranded vehicles. The situation has been worsened by the fact that many ferry operators failed to notify passengers in time about cancellations.

Wind gusts are expected to reach up to 100 km/h today, with winds unlikely to weaken before 19:00. Strong winds are also forecast over the weekend, adding further challenges for travellers to the islands during a period of high August holiday traffic.
