A 0.4% increase in births—57 more births—was recorded in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the corresponding period last year, according to data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). Specifically, 15,946 births were registered, comprising 8,184 boys and 7,762 girls. Of the 15,946 births, 859 were multiple births, including twins, triplets and other higher-order multiples.
More specifically, compared with the corresponding months of 2025, births increased by 2.6% in January and by 1.2% in March 2026, while a 2.9% decrease was recorded in February.
Nevertheless, births were down by 22% compared with five years earlier, when the number of births in the first quarter of 2021 reached 20,697.
An increase in births was recorded in seven of the country’s thirteen regions. The largest increases were observed in Thessaly (+62 births), the Peloponnese (+56) and Central Macedonia (+31). By contrast, the largest declines were recorded in Central Greece (-81 births), Attica (-32) and the Ionian Islands (-31).
The ratio of births to mothers of Greek nationality to births to foreign-national mothers stood at 9.5 to 1 in the first quarter of 2026, compared with 8.9 to 1 in the first quarter of 2025.
