The Minister of State, Stavros Papastavrou, and the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, Yiannis Bratakos, submitted their resignations to Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who accepted them [1], [2].

The resignations followed reports that the prime minister’s close associates met with businessman and “To Vima” owner Vangelis Marinakis shortly after the newspaper reported about the alteration of the audio regarding the Tempe crash which led to a motion of censure against the government initiated by the president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis.

Government sources stated that “their participation in a social event sent the wrong message.”

The government dismissed the report as “fake news,” while a representative called it part of a broader campaign against the government involving “organized financial interests.” N. Androulakis was accused of using the events to destabilize the government. Following the public revelation of the meeting, the president of PASOK remarked: “Two executives who had drinks on Sunday night? It was your ministers liaising with the specific businessman.”

Government sources said of the resignations: “Participating in a social meeting sent the wrong message.”

After the resignations were announced, Mr. Androulakis stated, “The core of corruption is the Maximus Mansion, and you know it well.” SYRIZA-PA remarked, “The forced ‘resignations’ of Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ closest associates confirm the level of corruption in which the ND government has plunged.”
