Nearly 40 days after the publication of the report from the Greek Organization for the Investigation of Railway Accidents and Safety (EODASAM) on the Tempi train crash, which mentions a “fireball” caused by an “unknown fuel,” the president of the organization, Christos Papadimitriou, said that any reference to a “fireball” would be removed from the report, a decision the organization implemented today.

“I consider the way some parts were included in the report regarding the justification for the fireball to be very hasty,” he said in an interview with Kathimerini, but emphasized that the report is “a thorough scientific work containing 17 safety recommendations, with only one strange and scientifically unresolved point, that of the fireball, which remains open.”

In an interview on SKAI this morning, Papadimitriou explained that he had requested that the fireball section not be included in the report unless it was first certified by a reputable institution (citing the University of Lausanne as an example). However, a senior official from the European Railway Agency insisted otherwise.

The Attorney General of the Supreme Court has called for an urgent preliminary investigation into the EODASAM report.

Papadimitriou added that this official (Bart Accou) relied on unofficial discussions with experts from the University of Ghent regarding the fireball, which led the university to state that it disagreed with the report’s findings.
The report from the National Technical University of Athens and Professor Karoni is now expected, as it will provide answers regarding the fire and explosion that occurred during the collision of the two trains in Tempi.
