Parliament yesterday approved a bill of the Ministry of Interior that gives the possibility to Greeks who live abroad and are registered in the electoral rolls to vote through postal vote.

Apart from the postal vote, the difference with the bill of 2019 is that restrictions are lifted so that they can vote, such as the years of residence in Greece.

The Constitution provides that in order for Greeks abroad to exercise their electoral right, it is required that 2/3 of the members of parliament vote in favor.

Thus, the provisions that were voted through passed (201 to 207) the limit of 200 positive votes that were constitutionally required, however, the provision for the creation of a single electoral constituency for the expatriates gathered only 162 votes and thus this will be implemented at least 18 months after the next elections.

Apart from the postal vote, the difference with the bill of 2019 is that restrictions are lifted so that they can vote – for example years of residence in Greece.

The two-day session of the Plenary takes place under the weight of the war in the Middle East, but also the developments that concern Cyprus. At the same time, statements were also made at the level of political leaders.

“Our military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean must aim only at the protection of Hellenism and especially of Cypriot Hellenism,” said among others Nikos Androulakis.

Sokratis Famellos and Alexis Charitsis requested the convening of the Council of Political Leaders under the President of the Republic, while Zoe Konstantopoulou characterized the prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as “a tail of Trump and Netanyahu.”
