In a statement to fyi.news, Petros Traganztzopoulos, Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection and Volunteering of Kavala, said that the situation with the fire on Mount Pangaeo, which has been burning for the 8th day, has improved.
Meanwhile, the communities of Mesoropi and Platanotopos in Kavala, where one of the two main fronts of the fire is located, have been declared in a state of emergency until September 23. The second major front of the fire is situated above Rodolivos and Proti in Serres.
The firefighting operation continues, with seven aerial units—four helicopters and three aircraft—operating since this morning. Additionally, 280 firefighters, 46 vehicles, 25 ground teams, and many volunteers are on site. While the overall situation of the fire has improved, active hotspots remain, according to the Fire Department.
So far, 13,410 hectares have burned, including 4.1% forested land, 83% shrubland, and 12.9% open land with minimal vegetation.
In contrast, the forest fire that broke out yesterday in Stegno Nestou has no active fronts. Scattered hotspots are being managed by ground and aerial firefighting teams. Two helicopters are conducting water drops, while 41 firefighters, 12 vehicles, and three ground teams are working in the area.
Meanwhile, the forest fire on Mount Olympus, which started earlier this week in a remote area at over 1,900 meters altitude, is largely contained. One helicopter is performing water drops, and 20 firefighters, three ground teams, and two vehicles are on site.
