In an interview she gave to KONTRA, Maria Karystianou, after confirming that her new party is getting closer and closer, was asked to comment on the statement of the SYRIZA MEP, Nikola Farandouris, that he “welcomes a movement for the universal demand for justice.”
“I have only positive things to say about Mr. Farandouris” was the response of Maria Karystianou, who said she met the MEP during an event they had organized in Brussels.
Previously, there had been reports that there had been an understanding between the two of them and that it was open the possibility that N. Farandouris would leave SYRIZA and take a position as co-president or vice-president in the party under formation.
Surveys until the end of 2025 showed that Maria Karystianou presents a potential vote in her favor, reaching even 30 percent.
All this led the president of SYRIZA, Socratis Famellos, to call the MEP and ask him to make a clear public statement and deny the relevant rumor, as his latest statements offend the party and its voters.
Nevertheless, this did not happen, and speaking to SKAI, Nikola Farandouris repeated that a citizens’ movement is more than welcome.
Thus, by decision of the president of SYRIZA, Nikolaos Farandouris was removed from the party’s eurogroup, while he was asked to hand over his seat, which he did not do.
“I continue my work in the European Parliament undisturbed. And I am accountable to the thousands of our fellow citizens who honored me with their vote and sent me to serve the interests of the homeland and the people. To them and only to them I am accountable. My seat belongs to them,” replied the MEP.
