The Three-member Misdemeanor Court handed down a three-year suspended prison sentence [1], [2], [3] to the police officer, driver of an official parliamentary car, who was convicted of manslaughter for the traffic accident outside the Parliament in March 2021, resulting in the death of 23-year-old Iason Lalaounis.
The court upheld the prosecutor’s recommendation, holding the policeman accountable for the death of the 23-year-old motorist. The court described the negligence of the policeman as “grave and cumulative.”
According to the prosecutor’s statement, the accused “engaged in a dangerous practice” by turning left on Vassilisis Sofias Avenue to access the Parliament area, disregarding the road sign instructing vehicles to proceed straight ahead, thereby obstructing the path of the 23-year-old.
The prosecutor suggested that no mitigating circumstances should be recognized, explaining that he had previously systematically violated the Code of Civil Procedure to enter the Parliament.
The judges dismissed the accused’s plea to acknowledge prior good conduct as a mitigating factor, as urged by their counsel.
The prosecutor concurred, underscoring the accused’s history of systematic Code of Conduct breaches, particularly the habit of turning left from Vasilissis Sofias Avenue into the Parliament forecourt. The prosecutor emphasized that “the conduct exhibited during the incident was not an isolated occurrence but rather aligned with past infractions.”
Iason’s parents and siblings stood witness to the court’s verdict.
