In the coming days, the government is expected to submit to Parliament a new legislative provision that will pave the way for the creation of a new port in Elefsina, financed by the United States, which will serve as a counterweight to the Port of Piraeus (OLP), whose operation is controlled by the Chinese company Cosco.
ONEX, which has taken over the Elefsina Shipyards and has received $125 million in financing from the US state development bank DFC, has the capacity to expand its activities beyond shipbuilding into the commercial, logistics, port, energy, and defense sectors.
The plan also includes a multi-purpose port capable of serving both naval and commercial vessels, including bulk cargo and container ships.
The project will include the existing shipyard facilities and an additional 400 stremmas of land extending toward the main port area.
Combined with the Thriasio Freight Center, existing infrastructure, and additional facilities to be developed, the new port is estimated to offer a viable alternative to the Port of Piraeus, despite its smaller size.
These decisions were made during a meeting held yesterday at noon between Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle at the Ministry of Development.
As a result, the Elefsina Shipyards are being upgraded, while at the same time advancing the US objective of creating a rival port to Piraeus.
