The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine is back in operation with some limitations after being inactive for nearly a week due to hacker attacks and a data breach affecting 31 million users.

The Internet Archive and its search engine, the Wayback Machine, function as a unique digital archive with over 866 billion sites. They serve as a valuable resource for researchers and journalists by providing access to sites that have changed or are no longer available.

The hacker group supporting Palestinian rights, “SN_BLACKMETA,” has taken responsibility for the attack.

The attack became known on October 9, when visitors to the Internet Archive started seeing a popup informing them that registered user data had been breached. This occurred just a few weeks after Google began integrating archived sites into its search results.

The Internet Archive administrator reported receiving a GB file containing information on registered members, including email addresses, usernames, and passwords. After the data breach, the Internet Archive also faced one or more large-scale hacker attacks that prevented users from accessing the website. Many Internet Archive services have gradually resumed after an investigation and security improvements, but the site may still be taken offline for maintenance.
