Donald Trump announced that the Israel–Lebanon ceasefire is being extended for three weeks and stressed that he “hopes” the leaders of the two countries will meet during that period.
“The meeting went very well! The United States is going to work with Lebanon in order to help it protect itself from Hezbollah,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. Hezbollah was not present at the talks and has stated that it retains “the right to resist occupation forces.”
Trump added that he looks forward to hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the near future.
More than 2,475 people have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli attacks and more than 62,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged.
Hezbollah and Israel have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, while B. Netanyahu had made clear that the IDF would remain in southern Lebanon and that it “has not completed the clearing out of Hezbollah.”
Before the announcement of the extension of the ceasefire, Lebanon’s Health Ministry had announced that three people were killed in an Israeli attack. Among those killed in IDF attacks was Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil.
Hezbollah MP Hassan Fadlallah stated that the organization wants the truce to continue, but “on the basis of the full compliance of the Israeli enemy.”
Meanwhile, the ceasefire in Iran also remains in effect, although talks have not resumed.
