Donald Trump said Iranian officials held talks in a positive atmosphere with US chief negotiator Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He added that another meeting would take place in the very near future.
Witkoff said he felt very positive about the meeting, which was the first such contact since US Vice President JD Vance met an Iranian delegation in Switzerland in June to agree on a memorandum of understanding.
Iranian officials confirmed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi took part in the meeting with Witkoff and that the talks were mediated by Qatari diplomats.
The last direct meeting between the two sides took place in June, between US Vice President JD Vance and an Iranian delegation.
Iran appears ready to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US ends its attacks and sanctions. Trump, meanwhile, said he faced a major decision: either to “obliterate” Iran or help it become “a great country”.
“Will I take them to hell, with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or for the generations to come?” he asked from the UN podium, adding that he expected Iran to reach an agreement quickly after the US midterm elections.
However, the two sides still appear to be far from reaching an agreement, according to The Guardian.
