UN: Jakarta is the most populous city in the world

  2. In the last count in 2018, Jakarta was 33rd and Tokyo 1st; however, it is now in 3rd place with 33 million residents, and 2nd is Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, with 40 million, which is expected by 2050 to be 1st.

Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is now the most populous city in the world with 42 million residents, according to a relevant UN report titled “World Urbanization Prospects 2025” (Prospects for urbanization in the world up to 2025).

The report, which comes from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, highlights how the growth and expansion of cities can pose a threat to sustainable development at a global level.

In the last count in 2018, Jakarta was 33rd and Tokyo 1st; however, it is now in 3rd place with 33 million residents. In 2nd place is Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, with 40 million, which is expected by 2050 to be 1st.

A megacity is defined as a city that numbers more than 10 million residents, and 19 out of 33 are in Asia.

Cairo in Egypt was the only non-Asian city that ranked in the top 10 positions.

Megacities, densely populated urban centers, are becoming more and more frequent around the world, and according to the report about 45% of the global population lives in cities. Overall there are 33 megacities in the world and 19 are in Asia.

The UN report highlighted which areas are expected to become the next megacities and to exceed 10 million residents, among them:

  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
  • Hajipur, India
  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
