The United States and Iran have agreed to extend their ceasefire for 60 days and to lift navigation restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz, allowing ships to pass through unhindered.

So far, the leadership of the two countries has not officially approved the agreement. Nevertheless, if that happens, it will represent the most significant step toward a broader peace deal. The news of a possible agreement came after another round of reciprocal attacks between the two countries, the latest in a series of similar incidents since the ceasefire took effect in early April.

After the United States and Israel launched the war against Iran, Tehran blocked the Strait of Hormuz in response, leaving around 1,500 ships stranded there.

“We are not there yet, but we are very close, and we will continue working in that direction,” US Vice President JD Vance told reporters in Washington. “I can’t guarantee that we will succeed, but at this moment I feel fairly optimistic,” Vance added.

The Trump administration has repeatedly stated that an agreement to end the hostilities is near, only for those claims to be questioned or downplayed by Tehran.

The reports pushed oil prices lower, as expectations grew that the Strait of Hormuz could fully reopen. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supply passes through the strategic waterway.
