The US has removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism after 47 years, paving the way for private investment and its reintegration into the global economy.
The move follows the removal of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and its leader, now Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, from US terrorism lists.
The Syrian president said that “Syria is being relieved of a heavy burden and turning the page on its painful past to begin its path towards development and reconstruction.” Turkey also welcomed the US decision, saying it removes “one of the biggest obstacles” to Syria’s reconstruction and economic development.
In December 2024, a coalition of forces led by Ahmed al-Sharaa overthrew Bashar al-Assad after 24 years as president.
Since 2025, Canada and the UK have gradually lifted sanctions imposed on Syria. Cuba, North Korea and Iran are now the only countries remaining on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism.
In December 2024, a coalition of forces led by Ahmed al-Sharaa overthrew Bashar al-Assad after 24 years in power. Assad then fled to Russia with his family, where he was granted asylum and now lives in Moscow.
