Until recently little known, New York State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani is now the leading contender for Mayor of New York City, holding a double-digit lead in the polls.
The candidate from the left wing of the Democratic Party secured a surprise victory in the June primaries, earning his party’s nomination for mayor.
Born in Uganda to a family of Indian origin, he identifies as a “democratic socialist” and received endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The 34-year-old also describes himself as “progressive and Muslim.” The progressive wing of the party views him as a potential “hope for renewal” within the Democratic Party, while moderates have been more cautious.
He moved to New York at the age of seven and, if elected, would become the city’s first Muslim and millennial mayor.
He based his campaign heavily on social media and on a large network of young volunteers.
He has pledged to address the high cost of living, promising, among other measures, to eliminate bus fares, expand childcare access, freeze rents in certain buildings, and build 200,000 affordable housing units over the next decade.
He estimates that these initiatives would be financed through $10 billion in additional revenue generated by higher taxes on corporations and high-income earners.
Through short-form videos, he highlighted his positions in a way that resonated with younger voters, projecting an image of authenticity and accessibility.
In many of these videos, he speaks in languages widely used among New York’s minority communities (such as Arabic, Urdu, and Spanish).
His social media engagement rate was reported to be 14 times higher than Andrew Cuomo’s, while mentions of his name reportedly outnumbered Cuomo’s by 30 to 1.
He ultimately secured his surprise primary victory despite trailing Cuomo by 30 percentage points earlier in the race.
His main opponent is former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who resigned several years ago following allegations of sexual harassment.
Like the outgoing mayor, Eric Adams — who withdrew from the race in his favor — Cuomo is running as an independent and represents a more conservative faction within the Democratic Party.
The Republican candidate is Curtis Sliwa, who is polling significantly lower.
Republicans have pointed to Mamdani’s positions — including his characterization of the situation in Gaza as “genocide” — to argue that the Democratic Party has shifted toward the extreme.
Donald Trump described him as “horrible” and urged voters to support Cuomo in order to prevent Mamdani’s election, even calling on the Republican nominee to withdraw.
“I’m not a fan of Cuomo, but if I have to choose between a bad Democrat and a communist, I choose the first,” Trump said, warning that he would cut federal funding to the city if Mamdani were elected.
