Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film “Bugonia” has its world premiere tonight at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, competing for the Golden Lion.

The plot follows two young men obsessed with conspiracy theories who kidnap the powerful CEO of a major corporation, convinced that she is an alien planning to destroy planet Earth. It is the director’s ninth feature film, once again starring Emma Stone, alongside Alicia Silverstone, Stavros Chalkias, and Aidan Delbis.

Also screening at the Festival are “Gorgonà” by Evi Kalogiropoulou and “Bear Hole” (“Αρκουδότρυπα”) by Stergios Dinopoulos and Chrysiana Papadaki.

Lanthimos, who won the Golden Lion in 2023 with Poor Things, had requested to film scenes of his new movie at the Acropolis, but the request was rejected.

The Festival “opened” yesterday with the screening of Paolo Sorrentino’s new film “La Grazia” and will conclude on September 6.

However, the situation in the Middle East also dominates the Mostra, as hundreds of directors, actors, and artists have signed a letter urging this year’s Venice Film Festival to take a clear stance against the genocide taking place in Gaza.

In the competition program, the film “The Voice of Hind Rajab” (“Η φωνή της Χιντ Ρατζάμπ”) has been selected. It tells the story of a young girl who was killed on January 19 in Gaza, along with members of her family, while they were trying to flee Israeli bombardments.
