95-year-old Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama was the top-selling contemporary artist for 2023, bringing in $80.9 million, according to Hiscox’s latest “Artist Top 100” report. Robert Read, head of art at Hiscox, said Kusama remains one of the “most influential” artists.

86-year-old British artist David Hockney earned $50.3 million from his works in 2023, securing the second position.

Kusama is renowned for her sculptures, which are dominated by polka dots and mirror installations (such as the Infinity Mirror Rooms). In a notable sale last year, one of her works (A Flower, 2014) sold for a record $10 million in Hong Kong. Curator Mika Yoshitake has remarked that Kusama’s artworks are designed to immerse viewers in the artist’s obsessions and repetitions.

According to the Hiscox report, 32% of contemporary art sold in 2023 was created by women, representing a 3% increase from 2022. Over the last five years, sales of contemporary art by female artists have surged by 179%. However, in 2023, sales of contemporary art by women had decreased by 8%, while sales by their male counterparts dropped by 20% in the same year.
