The selling price of sheep milk from the producer was increased by 9% in February 2026 (€1.5 /kg) from 2025 (€1.38 /kg), because of sheep and goat pox, while the retail price of other dairy products (feta), says “K”, is expected to increase.
Between October 2025 – February 2026, months of outbreak of the pox, production was reduced by 11,500 tons.
This corresponds to a reduction of 4.6% in comparison with the five-month period October 2024 – February 2025, a period when the pox was in the first months of its appearance.
In Xanthi production and livestock breeders were reduced by 70.7% and 75%, in Imathia 35% – 36%, in Magnesia 25.8% – 14.8% and in Serres 20.2% – 17%.
The number 4.6 may not seem big, however at prefecture level the reduction reflects the real dimension of the problem. Specifically, in Xanthi production and livestock breeders were reduced by 70.7% and 75% respectively, in Imathia by 35% and 36%, in Magnesia by 25.8% and 14.8% and in Serres by 20.2% and 17%.
In 2025 sheep milk was delivered by 37,951 producers when in 2022 they were 40,519, as the killings of flocks lead livestock breeders out of the profession.
“When a flock is cleared, it is replaced neither in months nor in one year. At least three years are required for return to normality. This exit is structural, not cyclical,” Ioannis Kaimakamis, agronomist and former vice president of OPEKEPE, states to Kathimerini.
