An internal Pentagon email revealed by Reuters states that the United States is considering the expulsion of Spain, and other allies, from NATO because they did not support the US war against Iran.
The United States is expressing its dissatisfaction over the unwillingness or refusal of certain allies to grant the United States access, permission to use bases, and overflight rights, known as ABO, for the war in Iran, the official said, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity.
The email stated that ABO constitutes “the absolute minimum threshold for NATO,” according to the official, who added that the options were circulating at high levels of the Pentagon.
During the US–Israel war against Iran, Trump had not ruled out a US withdrawal from NATO, although such a possibility is not mentioned in the email.
Spain had made clear at the start of the war that it would not grant the use of US bases for attacks on Iran, while after the Reuters revelation Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez commented that “we do not operate on the basis of emails,” but “on the basis of official documents and official government positions.”
US President Donald Trump has also sharply criticized NATO allies because they did not send their navies to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which was closed to international shipping after the start of the air war on February 28.
