The Greek-owned shipping industry controls the world’s most valuable tanker fleet, as well as the highest-value tanker orderbook globally, according to Kathimerini. Tanker orders refer to contracts signed between shipping companies and shipyards for the construction of new vessels.
Specifically, the active Greek-owned tanker fleet is valued at $66.38 billion, with China ranking second at $39.60 billion, followed by Japan at $24.52 billion, Singapore at $20.26 billion, and South Korea at $16.24 billion.
Greek tanker orders are worth $39.89 billion, compared with $9.52 billion for second-ranked China. The next positions in tanker orderbook value are held by Singapore with $8.61 billion, Hong Kong with $5.13 billion, and the United Kingdom with $5.08 billion.

At the same time, Kathimerini reports that beyond its dominance in energy transportation vessels, Greek shipping is undergoing a major fleet renewal cycle. Over a seven-month period, orders were placed for 328 newbuild vessels of all types—including bulk carriers, container ships, and gas carriers—with a total value of $28.5 billion.
In any case, according to analyses by Veson and Clarksons, Greek shipowners are currently experiencing their most active shipbuilding period since 2008.
Across the global shipping industry, regardless of vessel type, China retains first place in total newbuilding capacity under construction, with 38.5 million cgt compared with Greece’s 25.7 million cgt in April this year.
