A 160-meter tunnel was opened at the wrong location [1], [2] (Katehaki area) due to incorrect implementation of the design submitted by the companies themselves (the AVAX-GHELO-ALSTOM consortium), which are constructing Athens Metro Line 4.

The mistake was acknowledged by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Nikos Tachiaos, in response to a question from Communist Party of Greece (KKE) MP Christos Katsotis regarding “safety issues in the construction of the Line 4 tunnel.” He placed the blame on the consortium and stated that the ministry does not oversee the projects. He emphasized that it was a mistake in the implementation of a design that the consortium itself had submitted.

Line 4 (with a budget of €1.5 billion) will include 14 new stations, serve 340,000 passengers daily, and is expected to be completed by 2029.

The KKE MP said that “for over 6 months, and with the knowledge of ‘Hellenic Metro S.A.,’ the companies continued excavation for 160 meters in violation of the design, while at the same time, two work shifts are entering the tunnel daily, and within the excavation’s impact zone, there are roads, hospitals, and state infrastructure.”

Mr. Tachiaos, for his part, responded that as soon as the mistake was noticed, the relevant authority immediately ordered the continuation of work based on the submitted design and clarified that there is no danger to workers or passersby.
