Alexis Charitsis has resigned from his position as president of New Left (Nea Aristera).
He explains his reasons in a post, with the most important being his political disagreement with the majority of the party’s Political Secretariat and Central Committee regarding alliances.
He calls for “the reconstruction of a left-wing governing perspective against a neoliberal-conservative dominance with far-right characteristics. This is a position that has empowered our Parliamentary Group to fight every day against the establishment arrogance of the Right.”
As Gavriil Sakellaridis is not a Member of Parliament, the Parliamentary Group will elect its own president, with the most likely candidates being E. Tsakalotos, S. Anagnostopoulou, and P. Perka.
Regarding his future stance, he states: “I am not resigning from the view I support. I will continue to fight for it. Because I believe it is connected to something very simple yet essential: the need for the Left to be socially useful. To create developments and provide an outlet for people who today feel suffocated.”
According to media reports, there has been communication with Alexis Tsipras, who is moving quickly to establish a new party.
From now on, the duties of party president will be carried out by the current secretary, Gavriil Sakellaridis. As he is not an MP, the Parliamentary Group will elect its own president. So far, the names mentioned include Euclid Tsakalotos, Sia Anagnostopoulou, and Peti Perka.
