United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will visit Cyprus from 27 to 29 July, as announced on Thursday by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, during a press briefing at the UN headquarters in New York.
According to the spokesperson, the visit will take place within the framework of the Secretary-General’s Good Offices mission and his strong, tangible commitment to the Cyprus issue.
During his stay on the island, António Guterres will meet with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, as well as other stakeholders.
His meetings will focus on efforts to advance the peace process and support stability on the island, including through the work of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
The UN spokesperson added that further details regarding the Secretary-General’s programme will be announced at a later date.
UNFICYP is one of the United Nations’ longest-running peacekeeping missions. It was established in 1964 to prevent further clashes between the two communities and today monitors the ceasefire lines, maintains the buffer zone, carries out humanitarian activities, and supports the Secretary-General’s Good Offices mission. Its mandate has been extended until 31 January 2027.
