Yesterday, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, attended by the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, representatives of Hellenic Metro, and residents’ representatives, regarding cracks that have appeared in homes in Kypseli.

It was decided that court-appointed experts will be appointed to inspect the buildings and issue reports on their condition, with the costs not to be borne by private individuals. Hellenic Metro will ask the Technical Chamber of Greece to appoint the experts.

“The aim is to obtain the documented opinion of specialists who are independent of the project, in order to strengthen residents’ sense of safety and confirm the adequacy of the repairs, which the contractor consortium is contractually obliged to carry out—and is already carrying out where requested,” the Ministry stated.

Construction works have been suspended for the time being, and the Ministry of Infrastructure expects them to resume in the coming weeks.

In a statement, Hellenic Metro acknowledged that the repair works may not have been carried out adequately.

According to Efimerida ton Syntakton, if the Technical Chamber of Greece examines only the “adequacy of the repairs” already carried out by the contractor consortium—that is, the patching of cracked walls and the realignment of doors and windows—the benefit for residents’ sense of safety will be limited. At the same time, most residents are calling for the necessary studies and assessments to be completed before any repair works are undertaken on their homes.
