U.S. President Donald Trump met yesterday at the White House with the newly elected Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, for the first time since Carney’s recent electoral victory. During their meeting, Carney made it clear that Canada “is not and will never be for sale,” to which Trump replied, “never say never.”

Relations between the two neighboring countries, which share common alliances and are major trade partners, have been strained following Trump’s re-election due to U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods and his insistence on making Canada the “51st state of the U.S.”

M. Carney was elected prime minister by adopting an anti-Trump agenda, which helped him reverse the unfavorable polling numbers for his party.

The U.S. has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian products not covered by the free trade agreement between the two countries and Mexico, as well as on steel and aluminum exports, and a 10% tariff on energy and potassium salt exports. While many key goods (e.g., car parts) have been exempted, the tariffs still have a significant impact on the Canadian economy. Canada is the only country, apart from China, to have imposed its own tariffs on U.S. products.

Trump maintained a conciliatory tone during their meeting, according to the Νew York Times, and congratulated him on his election. Notably, Carney was elected prime minister by adopting an anti-Trump agenda, which helped him reverse the unfavorable polling numbers for his party.
