In Kypseli, cracks have been recorded in more than 20 apartment buildings, comprising more than 200 apartments in total, as a result of the Metro Line 4 construction works taking place in the area. Residents are leaving their homes fearing a possible collapse, according to Efimerida ton Syntakton.

“There were tenants who left as soon as the cracks appeared. Every apartment has suffered exactly the same damage—from the basement to the upper floors. At the moment, approximately 200 apartments have recorded damage, from Kypseli Square diagonally to Evvoias Street, where construction has been halted for the past one and a half to two months,” Kypseli resident Alexandros Koutroularis told Orange Press Agency.

According to the Kypseli Residents’ Initiative, which has highlighted the issue, the problems began when the tunnel boring machine was excavating the underground section between Kypseli Square station and Evelpidon.

Residents’ concerns and fears were further heightened by the recent building collapse in Petralona.

The issue prompted an urgent prosecutorial investigation, while the Municipality of Athens stated that it will provide services to the residents and offer them legal support.

The prosecutor assigned to the investigation has been instructed to examine the evidence and determine whether the ongoing construction works pose any danger and whether any criminal offences may have been committed that could give rise to criminal liability, Efimerida ton Syntakton reports.
