Dozens of people were diagnosed with salmonella yesterday in Lamia. Most of them (30) sought treatment at the hospital, and because those infected had eaten at different restaurants rather than the same establishment, authorities concluded that the source was a contaminated batch of chicken.
The total number of cases is higher than 30, as several people remained at home following advice from their doctors. As of the morning of July 14, 17 people were still hospitalized at Lamia General Hospital, either in inpatient wards or under short-term observation. According to Lamia Report, 13 of them are under the age of 31.
The supplier of the contaminated chicken has since been identified. However, according to Central Greece Deputy Regional Governor Andreas Toulias, authorities must still trace the intermediary supplier and the poultry farm where the chicken originated.
Salmonella can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, and headaches, with symptoms appearing up to six days after infection.
“We sent an inspector accompanied by a veterinarian, and inspections are being carried out at all the food establishments that received the suspected chicken. We have also examined all the employees. We are focusing on the supplier. We found them, collected raw chicken samples, and sent them to a laboratory in Chalkida. We are trying to trace the entire supply chain because there is the final supplier, an intermediary, and the poultry farm,” he said.
He added: “I believe we won’t see any more cases. Chicken is a particularly high-risk food, especially during the summer. We have identified where it came from, and we are working to ensure it is not supplied again. I believe we have contained the source.”
