The European Parliament approved the implementation of the EU-US trade agreement abolishing tariffs on American industrial and agricultural products.
The agreement dates back to July 2025, when the United States agreed to cap tariffs on European cars and most EU exports at 15%, effective from September 2025.
MEPs voted in favor by 440 votes to 151, with 50 abstentions, thereby fulfilling the European Union’s part of the agreement. Ratification and implementation of the agreement by EU countries were delayed because of Trump’s threats to annex Greenland and against Spain, which he had threatened over its refusal to provide US bases for the war against Iran.
The EU can suspend the agreement if the United States does not reduce tariffs on steel and aluminum products by the end of 2026.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the vote. “A deal is a deal — and the EU is delivering on its part,” she wrote in a social media post.
The European Parliament retains the right to ask the European Commission to suspend the agreement if the United States does not reduce tariffs on steel and aluminum products by the end of 2026.
The EU’s tariff concessions will also expire at the end of 2029, after Trump’s expected departure from the presidency.
