Yesterday afternoon, the perpetrator of the femicide involving the 40-year-old woman in Menidi was apprehended after being discovered intoxicated in a building in the Fyli area.
The 50-year-old suspect, purportedly admitting to fatally stabbing the woman in the street, was brought before the prosecutor. Charges of premeditated murder, illegal weapon possession, and weapon usage under a composed mental state were pressed against him. Reports suggest the accused confessed to the crime, attributing it to the victim’s alleged financial drain on him and her involvement with another man.
According to media reports, the temporary detention of the perpetrator would not have been meaningful as there would not have been a forensic medical report on the attack within three days.
It’s noteworthy that the victim lodged three complaints of domestic violence against her enstranged spouse over the past 11 years. The first complaint dates back to 2013, the second to 2022, and the most recently just a few days ago. In each instance, the man was arrested.
Interestingly, he was due to stand trial today for the latest complaint, having been released on bail with restrictive conditions following his arrest. According to the new penal code, the court could have expedited the case to be heard within three days and ordered temporary detention of the perpetrator during this period.
According to the Hellenic Police, the victim was informed about the option to install the “Panic Button” application on her mobile phone, for which she received a password. Additionally, she was informed about the possibility of being transferred to a shelter but declined the offer.
The perpetrator requested and was granted an extension by the Investigating Magistrate, who will handle the case, to prepare his defense by Monday.
