Patients and healthcare workers at ‘Agios Savvas’ suffered burns due to the rushed transfer and installation (due to renovations) of equipment at ‘Elpis,’ according to ‘Efimerida ton Syntakton.’

The burns were caused by ultraviolet lamps that remained on for hours without the proper warning signal during surgeries. The injuries include burns to the retina, resulting in permanent damage.

Workers are calling for accountability, for the incident to be recognized as a workplace accident, and for the protection of both staff and patients, as they had previously warned about the risks of this plan, describing the process as ‘rushed’ and ‘dangerous.’

‘Agios Savvas’ had 12 operating rooms and 2 more (for minor surgeries) at ‘Nikros Kourkoulos,’ while ‘Elpis’ has provided only 2

They described the government’s actions as “recklessness” for the swift transfer of surgeries to unsuitable rooms at ‘Elpis.’

Meanwhile, the situation at ‘Agios Savvas’ has led to a significant reduction in surgeries, with only 3 out of 10 being carried out, and patients are transferred after their procedures by private ambulances.

Initially, according to ‘Efimerida ton Syntakton,’ the plan was to move the surgeries to ‘Sismanogleio,’ but pressure from staff and the media coverage prevented this option.

However, ‘Elpis’ also proved unsuitable, lacking necessary infrastructure or preparation, based on workers’ complaints, with rushed work carried out by external contractors. As a result, ‘Agios Savvas’ staff ended up taking on responsibilities outside of their roles.
