Israel extends for 48 hours the detention of 2 activists — one Brazilian (Thiago Ávila) and one Spanish (Saif Abu Keshek) — who participated in the solidarity flotilla for Gaza, without official charges, however it is possible that it will charge them with “providing assistance to the enemy” and “participation in a terrorist organisation”. Both have reported beating and very poor detention conditions.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the two activists of being connected with an organisation that is under sanctions of the US Treasury Department.
Specifically, it described Abu Keshek as a leading member of the activist organisation PCPA (Palestinian Conference Abroad) and claimed that Ávila is also connected to the organisation and “suspected of illegal activity”. Washington accuses the PCPA of acting “covertly” on behalf of Hamas.
fyi: Spain and Brazil issued a joint statement, condemning “the abduction of two of their citizens in international waters by the government of Israel”.
Israel on Friday intercepted 22 of the 58 vessels of the mission, arrested 175 activists from the flotilla and transferred them, except for the 2 who are held in Israel, to Crete.
After it became known that the two men were transferred to Israel for questioning, Spain and Brazil issued a joint statement, condemning the “abduction of two of their citizens in international waters by the government of Israel”.
Meanwhile, although it was scheduled for yesterday, due to weather the Greek mission for Gaza will depart tomorrow from Syros.
