Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991, but despite the fact that it has its own government and currency, it had never been recognized by any state until Friday 26.12.25, when it was recognized by Israel.
The territory of present-day Somaliland had been, from the end of the 19th century, a British protectorate* under the name British Somaliland.
*an area that is politically, militarily and economically controlled by one or more “protecting” countries.

Somaliland, with a population comparable to that of the Attica region, is located on the Gulf of Aden, opposite Yemen and next to Djibouti, which hosts military bases of the US, China, France and several other countries.
Somaliland is also not a member of the United Nations, is not officially recognized by the African Union, while Somalia considers it part of its territory.
At least 20 countries, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, have condemned in a joint statement Israel’s recognition, linking it to attempts at the “forcible displacement of the Palestinian people”.
The Associated Press had reported in March 2025 that Israel had approached Somaliland with the aim of receiving Palestinians from Gaza, within the framework of the US president’s plan, which was later abandoned.
