The 46-year-old woman accused in connection with the Marfin case is expected to appeal against the order for her pre-trial detention, with her defence challenging both the evidentiary basis of the charges and the necessity of keeping her in custody.
The woman, a permanent resident of the United Kingdom, denies any involvement in the arson attack and, according to her lawyer Kostas Papadakis, says that although she took part in the demonstration on 5 May 2010, she had passed by the Marfin bank more than half an hour before the incidents and had already left central Athens.
A key part of the defence case concerns the photographic material included in the case file. According to her lawyer, there is no identification linking her to the person in question, as the same material had already been examined in 2022, when the investigation was shelved, while the only substantially “new” piece of evidence to have emerged since then is an anonymous email.
This is the third time the Marfin arson case has been reopened — in 2012, 2022 and 2026 — with the previous two investigations ending without charges.
The defence has also submitted a technical report by digital evidence analyst Giorgos Karathanasis, which, according to her lawyer, finds no identification or sufficient similarity between the defendant and the person examined by police in the photographic material.
Despite these arguments, the judicial authorities ordered her pre-trial detention. According to reports regarding the reasoning behind the decision, the 46-year-old was described as “particularly dangerous and committed to the group’s plan of action.”
Kostas Papadakis described the detention order as unjust and said the defence would pursue legal remedies, maintaining that the available evidence is insufficient to support the charges
