The heatwave is responsible for at least seven deaths in France, as an extreme heatwave sweeps across countries in Europe, breaking records in some cases.
“What I can say today is that there have been seven deaths directly or indirectly linked to the heat,” French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon told TF1 television, adding that five of them were caused by drowning.
The heatwave will continue over the coming days, with temperatures reaching as high as 39°C, while countries such as the UK (with temperatures hitting 35°C in London), Italy, Spain and Portugal have also been affected.
According to analysts, heatwaves in June are now around ten times more likely in Europe compared to the pre-industrial era.
Climate models have already estimated that, because of the effects of climate change, heatwaves in June are now around ten times more likely in Europe compared to the pre-industrial era, while the same trend is also beginning to emerge in May.
Experts stress that the fact heatwaves are now beginning as early as May is a result of climate change.
“This extension of the heatwave season is absolutely characteristic of the effects of climate change,” climate researcher Robert Vautard told Agence France-Presse. “Eventually, we will be seeing similar heat events even in April and October.”
