A closed briefing and presentation of proposals to improve the traffic problem in Attica, focusing on Kifisos, was held yesterday Wednesday at the Maximos Mansion, under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The first concerns a carpooling program, so that large companies encourage through incentives employees to travel two-by-two or three-by-three, in order to reduce the number of cars on the roads of Attica.
The second concerns opening the old Thebes–Elefsina national road, so that some trucks can travel there, as the restriction of their circulation for certain hours (7 to 10 in the morning) on Kifisos, which had “been discussed,” cannot be implemented.
Experts predict an increase in travel on critical road axes of Attica by 16% by 2030.
Better management of daily incidents that create traffic jams was also discussed. According to data from the Association of Greek Transport Engineers, cited by Kathimerini, 36 breakdowns occur daily on the Attiki Odos, mainly because many vehicles are old.
The medium-term measures discussed include the smart traffic light system, which has been effective in Thessaloniki and will be considered for Attica, while by the end of 2026 a significant improvement in the frequency of Attica’s public transport routes is expected, which will ease traffic.
Long-term measures include new bypass road axes, completion of Metro Line 4, and the creation of bike lanes.
The proposals presented will be further developed by the Ministries of Transport and Labor, in order to take their final form and be presented soon.
