US President Donald Trump temporarily froze military aid to Ukraine yesterday until the country “shows good faith in peace talks with Russia,” according to senior officials who spoke to the New York Times.
The order takes immediate effect and applies to weapons and ammunition worth over $1 billion that are in the process of being shipped to Ukraine. Since Russia’s invasion nearly three years ago, the US has approved a total of $175 billion in aid to Ukraine. This aid includes not only military support but also financial assistance to help pay teachers, doctors, and maintain government functions during the war.
Russia has shown no sign of accepting anything beyond the annexation of large parts of Ukraine it has already seized.
This decision puts the US at odds with its NATO allies and seems to benefit Russia. According to the newspaper, if the suspension lasts long enough, Russian President Vladimir Putin could push for further territorial gains.
The freeze in aid followed Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday. The meeting, initially intended to finalize a deal regarding Ukraine’s valuable resources, turned into a verbal confrontation, with Trump claiming that Zelenskyy “does not want peace,” leaving the agreement unresolved.
