The wildfires in Western Attica have entered their fourth consecutive day, with the situation worsening due to repeated flare-ups and strong winds. The most critical fire fronts are in Porto Germeno, Kithaironas and Kandili, where the fires are spreading through rugged terrain and, in some areas, in two directions, making it difficult for ground crews to gain access. More than 500 firefighters, about 200 fire engines, aircraft, volunteers and members of the Armed Forces are taking part in the firefighting operation.
The seriousness of the situation was highlighted by a new 112 emergency alert ordering the evacuation of Kandili, Ano Vlychada and Agios Konstantinos, with residents told to head towards Nea Peramos. The latest developments show that, despite the large firefighting effort, the wildfire remains highly active and can change direction quickly. The risk of wildfires will remain very high in Attica on Tuesday, while strong wind gusts continue to limit the safe operation of firefighting aircraft at times.
The support measures are expected to include full coverage of home repair or rebuilding costs, financial assistance of up to €6,000, and a rental subsidy of up to €500 for people affected by the wildfires.
Meanwhile, new wildfires were reported in several parts of the country. Around midday, fires broke out in Nea Triglia, Halkidiki, near scattered homes but with no immediate threat reported, and in Tragano Elias, where 49 firefighters, 12 fire engines, a ground crew and 22 Czech firefighters are taking part in the firefighting operation. Earlier in the day, wildfires also broke out in Pylos, Pieria and Kilkis, placing further pressure on the country’s civil protection services.
In Kefalonia, a new flare-up was reported in the Katelios area, where 70 firefighters, 21 fire engines, three ground crews and one aircraft are battling the blaze, while power outages continue. In Phocis, inspections have begun on eight damaged buildings, and authorities are considering a request to declare the affected areas in a state of emergency.
Investigations into the causes of the wildfires are continuing, with no overall conclusions yet on the different incidents. Support measures are expected to include full coverage of the cost of repairing or rebuilding damaged homes, financial assistance of up to €6,000, and a rental subsidy of up to €500 for people whose homes have been declared temporarily uninhabitable.
