The Employees’ Union of Skylitseio Hospital in Chios (SESNOCH) has warned that understaffing, accumulated annual leave and outstanding rest days have pushed staff to their limits.
According to the union’s complaint, employees at Skylitseio Hospital in Chios, excluding doctors, are owed more than 13,000 days of annual leave and rest.
SESNOCH describes a situation of intense workplace pressure and severe understaffing, arguing that staffing levels in most departments are below safe limits. It says that in several shifts, only one or two employees are on duty.
The workers also raise concerns about the way healthcare professions are being considered for inclusion in the category of hazardous and unhealthy occupations.
In its statement, the union contrasts this situation with government claims about “the best National Health System of all time,” arguing that the day-to-day reality at Chios Hospital is very different.
According to the union, employees have for years been expected to keep the hospital operating with insufficient staff, limited opportunities for rest and serious difficulties in planning their personal and family lives.
The workers also raise concerns about low pay in the public healthcare sector, the way healthcare professions are being considered for inclusion in the category of hazardous and unhealthy occupations, and the prospect of lifting permanent employment status in the public sector through a possible constitutional revision.
