Ukraine accepted the U.S. proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia yesterday, following talks between the two sides in Saudi Arabia. The next step is awaiting Russia’s response, which will be communicated by a White House representative.
The U.S. confirmed that military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine will continue, despite their previous announcement to suspend these efforts. Additionally, the two sides are expected to soon reach an agreement on the exploitation of Ukrainian minerals by the U.S.
Donald Trump stated from the White House that he hopes Vladimir Putin will accept the agreement.
Ukrainian minerals include natural gas, oil, and rare earth elements—metals crucial for the production of computers, batteries, and energy systems.
If the Russian president agrees, it would mark the first ceasefire in over three years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the ball is “now in Russia’s court” following the completion of the negotiations. “If Russia says no, then unfortunately we will know what the obstacle to peace is,” he added.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other European leaders, including Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, welcomed the peace agreement.
However, just hours after Ukraine accepted the proposal, Russia launched airstrikes on Kyiv and Kharkiv.
